House Republicans Upset Over Failed Censure Motion Against Plaskett

In Washington, tensions among House Republicans flared on Tuesday after a proposal to censure Rep. Stacey Plaskett (D-VI) over text messages exchanged with the late Jeffrey Epstein fell flat. Many Republicans accused the leadership of colluding with Democrats to protect Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) from facing similar scrutiny.

Initially, Republicans united to block the censure motion against Plaskett. Yet, the proposal ultimately failed, with three Republicans voting against it, three voting “present,” and four abstaining entirely.

If the censure had been successful, Democrats were poised to retaliate with a similar motion against Mills, who faces allegations of stolen valor, financial misconduct, and domestic violence—claims he firmly denies.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) expressed her discontent after the failure, saying, “The Republican Party has too many problems and should not be running for re-election.”

The situation echoed a previous unsuccessful attempt in September to censure Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) for her controversial remarks regarding conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Democrats had indicated they would also censure Mills, which likely influenced Republicans’ decision to abandon the resolution against Omar.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) remarked, “Another backroom deal was made to keep Cory Mills from censorship for Stolen Courage,” pointing out discrepancies in Mills’ military record.

Representative Kat Cammack (R-Florida) noted that a small faction of Republicans voted to remove Plaskett from her role on the House Intelligence Committee to shield fellow Republicans facing ethical concerns.

Expounding further on the issue, Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) initiated a privilege resolution to censure Plaskett after revelations from a House Oversight Committee hearing in February 2019 showed that Epstein had advised her on questioning Michael Cohen, former President Trump’s attorney.

Norman criticized the apparent self-protection of establishment politics, stating, “This is the problem in Washington! The establishment protects itself while the American people are sidelined.”

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) condemned the lack of accountability, noting that the failed vote highlighted corruption within the party.

Mills, a military veteran elected to Congress in 2022, has been embroiled in various scandals. Earlier this year, the Washington D.C. police began investigating claims of assault against a female Republican activist, although the victim later retracted significant portions of her complaint.

Further complicating matters, Mills faced a lawsuit from Miss United States Lindsay Langston, who accused him of attempting to blackmail her with intimate images. A Florida judge has since issued a restraining order against him.

Despite receiving the Bronze Star Medal for his military service, allegations regarding Mills’ role during those events persist, with several individuals claiming they don’t recall his account of heroism.

Mills also faces scrutiny from the House Ethics Committee for not disclosing certain financial details and making misleading statements.

While Mills is married, he recently indicated an intention to divorce his wife. He continues to deny any wrongdoing amid these scandals.

As of now, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), House Minority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.), and Mills have not commented on the ongoing controversies.
