Parents Demand Resignation of LA School Superintendent
Frustrated parents are calling for the resignation of the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District after federal agents conducted a raid on his home and office.
On Wednesday morning, the FBI searched Superintendent Alberto Carvalho’s office in downtown Los Angeles, his residence in San Pedro, and a location in Miami. This was part of an investigation into corruption tied to a malfunctioning AI chatbot.
The Board of Education convened an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss “civil servant employment” and matters concerning the superintendent. The meeting was held privately but included a period for public comments.
Angry parents filled the room, demanding Carvalho’s resignation. Some even insisted that the entire board of directors, whose chairs were notably empty, should be disbanded.
These parents argued that the raid underscores ongoing issues with transparency and decision-making within the district, which oversees substantial public funding.
“If this investigation escalates, I urge each of you to resign with dignity,” said Juan Megondi. Meanwhile, Diana Ghirelli noted, “Everyone got scared because the FBI came.” She claimed to have submitted thousands of signatures advocating for school safety and accountability, expressing frustration about a lack of communication regarding budgets and major decisions.
She dismissed speculation surrounding the investigation, asserting that families deserve facts rather than rumors about the district’s leadership.
Others voiced concerns about how instability might impact students who rely on essential services, particularly regarding individualized education planning and staffing.
Some parents remarked that they often felt overlooked when raising concerns, alleging that district leaders only paid attention during crises.
The FBI raid sent shockwaves through the nation’s second-largest school system, igniting political turmoil among families already dissatisfied with the administration.
Witnesses noted that federal agents arrived early Wednesday, some armed, and removed boxes of evidence from Carvalho’s home while employees at the district headquarters appeared uncertain about whether to report to work.
A local advocacy group, Parents Supporting Teachers, is urging the school board to appoint an interim superintendent swiftly to ensure leadership continuity throughout the district.
This group, claiming 30,000 members, argues that Carvalho has failed to maintain standards of transparency and accountability regarding public funds.
Another advocacy group, Schools Beyond Screens, echoed this sentiment, pushing for his immediate suspension pending the investigation’s outcome. They also called for an audit of all tech contracts signed under Carvalho’s leadership since 2022.
Pedro Noguera, the dean of the Rossier School of Education at USC, stated that a school district cannot be effectively led by someone under such serious scrutiny. “We are facing budget cuts and union negotiations. It’s a challenging time for the district,” he added, drawing comparisons to a former Chicago superintendent who resigned amidst a bribery investigation.
The investigation seems to connect with LAUSD’s interactions with an AI company named Allhere, whose founder faces fraud charges from 2024.
While the company created the chatbot used by the district, it’s still unclear if that contract is central to the investigation or whether Carvalho is a specific target.
Carvalho, who previously served as the superintendent in Miami-Dade County, began leading LAUSD in 2022.
No details about potential charges against him have been disclosed, and the affidavit related to the search remains sealed.
In a statement, LAUSD acknowledged the law enforcement activity and said, “The district is cooperating with the investigation, but no further information is available at this time.”
The LAUSD Board of Education added, “We understand that today’s news raises concerns throughout our school community. Our priority is to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for students, families, and employees while continuing to focus on our responsibilities.”
