Anita Alvarez discusses her near-drowning experience.

American Olympian Anita Alvarez had a dramatic incident at the World Aquatics Championship in June 2022 when she had to be rescued from the pool after momentarily losing consciousness. Fast forward to 2024, she contributed to Team USA’s success, helping them secure a silver medal at the Paris Olympics. However, that harrowing moment when her coach jumped into the pool two years ago overshadowed her preparations for the Games.

In a recent interview with People Magazine, Alvarez reflected on that alarming experience. She described a sudden awareness as she perceived light through her eyes, realizing, “I’m not breathing.” She added that the impact of the incident was greater than she initially recognized, highlighting how it gained unexpected attention.

While her focus shifted to her journey outside the pool, Alvarez has joined the U.S. Air Force, graduating from basic training in January. She now participates in a world-class athletic program, assisting fellow military members with their training while fulfilling their service commitments.

After her return to the water, Alvarez has been gearing up for the World Championships scheduled to take place in Singapore later this year. Throughout her career, she has accumulated three bronze medals and one silver at various World Championships.
