Biden administration adviser Anita Dunn said President Biden is focused on what happens next following his poor performance in this week’s debate.
Dunn appeared on MSNBC’s “The Weekend” on Saturday to continue the Biden campaign’s attempts to quell post-debate panic.
“The debate is a momentary event in the election campaign.” She said: “And the reality is, I think voters experienced this debate a little bit differently than maybe some of the insiders did.”
She added, “The conversation we had was, ‘Okay, what do we do next?'”
Dunn said his campaign is looking at ongoing research and key issues that matter to voters.
“So, as we often see after these debates, I don’t think we’re going to see any major changes,” Dunn said. “The president is going to continue to go out in public and make the case for why Donald Trump is a threat to the country and why there’s a better future for America.”
Dunn argued that Biden’s vision includes a country that is inclusive of all people and where the federal government is not seen as an “instrument of retribution.”
“We are a true democracy, we may have differences, but at the end of the day we’re all united under our fundamental American values, so he’s going to continue to talk about that,” Dunn said.
Biden’s shaky performance on Thursday has led to calls from both parties for him to step aside and for someone new to take on former President Trump in the fall. The White House and Biden’s campaign have rejected those calls and said the president is not going anywhere.
On Friday, he gave a powerful speech to a crowd in North Carolina, saying he knows how to get back up after being knocked down.
“Folks, I can’t walk as easily as I used to. I can’t talk as smoothly as I used to. I can’t debate as well as I used to,” Biden said, “But I know what I need to do now. I know how to tell the truth. I know right from wrong. And I know how to do this job.”
The debate was seen as a pivotal moment in Biden’s stagnant campaign but it failed to live up to expectations, leaving Democrats to question his ability to lead the presidency for another four years.
