Anne Neilson on Embracing Imperfection During the Holidays and Focusing on Jesus

Neilson’s Reflections on Christmas

Neilson shared that her children recall her crying on Christmas morning—not from sentimental thoughts about Jesus’ birth, but from sheer exhaustion. She confesses that for many years, she strived for a flawless Christmas, yet felt a weight that often overshadowed the beauty of the season. This year, she encourages her readers to slow down and truly reflect on what Christmas means. Through her storytelling, she addresses the struggles many women face: feeling overwhelmed and emotionally drained while trying to create meaningful traditions. She emphasizes that Jesus is a genuine gift and that God meets us in our confusion and fatigue.

Her enchanting angel paintings add a touch of divine beauty to the Christmas experience. Readers can delve into Old Testament prophecies, nativity scenes, and heartfelt prayers that promote a deeper connection with God during this time of year.

Neilson recalls a moment of exhaustion during the holidays when God gently reminded her that her family needed His presence over perfection. She has learned to let go of pressure and instead focus on the real miracle of the season: Jesus, who came to bring peace rather than performance. Whether one is experiencing joy or facing sadness and loneliness, Anne Neilson’s Christmas Angels offers a space for reflection and a return to the essence of Christmas. In a conversation with Crosswalk/Salem Media, she underscores one key point: Jesus is the heart of this season.

Q&A with Anne Neilson

Pedestrian crossing: What are you looking forward to at Christmas?

Anne Neilson: I cherish the time when my family gathers during Christmas.

CW: Why did you decide to write a book?

An: Christmas should feel like it lasts all year. It’s always about Jesus. I think we need to take a moment to pause. Everyone seems so wrapped up in busyness. I really wanted this book to help people refocus on Jesus. This is my third dedication; I’ve always been known for my angel paintings, and my life feels like a dedication to that purpose.

CW: What has God taught you lately?

An: The Lord reveals both the spiritual happenings to me and how they resonate in our world. I see myself as a storyteller, sharing how God uses my failures and successes for His glory. I wanted to write this small devotional to encourage reflection and seeking the Lord at this time of year.

CW: When you look back, do you marvel at what God has done?

An: As I think back on the last 22 years, I am thankful that my art has become a ministry. I struggled in college and didn’t do well in art class, which surprises me. I’m genuinely grateful, as God recognized my heart’s desire to create.

CW: As an artist known for angels, what goes through your mind when you create them?

An: We worship a God who made angels with purpose. It’s about the spiritual realm and what happens there. I pray for protective angels surrounding my family, marriage, and children, hoping for many fighting angels. We don’t worship angels themselves; we worship the God who created them.
