Alaska Senate Race Heats Up

A detailed profile published recently highlights Dan Sullivan, a candidate for the Alaska State Senate, who has never cast a vote for President Donald Trump. This is notable since he is a Republican competing against another Republican senator who shares his name.

Sullivan, 69, has a background as a teacher and hails from a fishing village in St. Petersburg. He is entering the primary race against two-term Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan. Some Republicans have labeled him as a Democratic plant, but he claims to be running in good faith as a moderate Republican and not as a hidden Democrat.

Interestingly, he mentioned that he has voted for Democratic candidates in the last three presidential elections, though he didn’t support the U.S. senator in the previous two contests. Sullivan expressed his support for Democrat Mary Peltola in the 2022 and 2024 House elections and has donated to her and other Democratic candidates. When asked if he would prefer Peltola over the incumbent in the upcoming November election, he responded without hesitation.

“If it was between two people, it probably would be,” he said, suggesting a preference that aligns more closely with Peltola.

Moreover, Sullivan has participated in local events protesting the Trump administration, including at least one notable “No Kings” protest, which reflects his opposition to the current direction of his party.

“I don’t think the Republican Party needs to be the MAGA party,” he stated, emphasizing his differing views.

In response to Sullivan’s candidacy, Trump recently endorsed the incumbent senator, sharing a photo of him with a “Support Trump” sticker, alongside a crossed-out name of the challenger. Trump accused Democrats of trying to deceive voters by putting up another Dan Sullivan to siphon votes away from the established senator.

In retaliation, Sen. Sullivan has accused his challenger of attempting to mislead voters to rig the election in favor of Peltola and has even threatened legal action against him. His campaign issued a statement emphasizing the need for fair elections in Alaska, free from political manipulation.

The challenger firmly denies any collaboration with Democrats, asserting that he has had no contact with Peltola’s campaign, calling his campaign entirely his own decision. “I’m not ‘fake’ Dan Sullivan. I’m Dan Sullivan,” he asserted, highlighting his identity as the legitimate candidate.

Interestingly, a Democratic consultant, Amber Lee, was involved in running the challenge file, according to some metadata reviewed, though Sullivan claims he found her online and that she is no longer part of the process. He registered as a Republican on the same day he filed his candidacy.

The situation has caught the attention of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Alaska, which is investigating whether his candidacy could disenfranchise voters in Alaska and if there are any fraudulent aspects to his fundraising efforts.

As the primary election approaches, Republicans are focused on maintaining their slim 53-47 majority in the Senate during what has been a challenging midterm election year. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has been seen encouraging Democrats in red states to run as independents, aiming to pull votes away from Republican incumbents.

In a bold statement, the challenger remarked, “I’ve been Dan Sullivan longer than you’ve been Dan Sullivan,” as he positions himself amidst this contentious race.
