Other Democrats are calling for President Biden to resign.

Rep. Marie Grusenkamp Perez of Washington, who represents a district won by Republicans in 2020, is the latest member of her party to suggest Biden will “lose” the November election to former President Trump following his dismal performance in last week’s debate.

Perez said the first 2024 presidential debate was “painful to watch” and acknowledged that while many Democrats maintain their support for former President Biden, they believe “he will lose to Trump.”

“About 50 million Americans turned on their TVs to watch the debate, and I was one of them, and it was about five very difficult minutes. We all saw what we saw, and we can’t change that. I think the truth is that Biden is going to lose to Trump,” Biden, a Democrat, said in an interview with KATU-TV.

The congressman said he doesn’t believe Biden will win in 2024, but “a fundamental principle of our democracy is to accept the results of the election,” adding that primary voters have already chosen Biden as the Democratic nominee.

While Democrats remained largely silent in the first few days after the debate, a growing number of them are beginning to express uncertainty about the president’s reelection bid.

Maine Democratic Rep. Jared Golden issued a similar statement on Tuesday, saying “Democrats are panicking about their debate performance” and that “Trump will win.”

“After the first presidential debate, many Democrats are panicking about whether President Joe Biden should withdraw as the party’s nominee,” Golden wrote in an op-ed in the Bangor Daily News. “Biden’s poor performance in the debate didn’t surprise me, and it didn’t upset me as much as it did others, because the outcome of this election has been clear to me for months. I’m not going to vote for him, but Donald Trump is going to win, and I’m OK with that.”

Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas became the first Democrat to publicly call on his own party’s nominee to step down amid doubts about the strength of Biden’s candidacy.

“My decision to publicly express these strong concerns was not made lightly and does not in any way diminish my respect for all that President Biden has accomplished. Unlike President Trump, President Biden’s first commitment has always been to our country, not himself. I expect the President to make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw,” Doggett said Tuesday. “I respectfully urge him to do so.”

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is considering nominating Biden as its candidate as early as mid-July, despite growing turmoil within the party.
