Another Octogenarian Democrat Is Creating Disruption for Her Party

President Donald Trump and others are at odds over the immigrant raids that have dominated headlines, as both Republicans and Democrats vie to shape the narrative. Recently, remarks from an 86-year-old Democratic representative regarding violence during protests have created a ripple of concern within her party.

Reports indicate that activists have turned California into a scene of chaos, featuring things like burning vehicles and looting. Yet Democratic Representative Maxine Waters asserted there was no such violence, despite considerable evidence to the contrary.

“No one was shot, no one was killed,” Waters claimed. “They called the National Guard, so there was no violence. I was out there. I know.” She suggested that what transpired in various neighborhoods was being misrepresented and urged people to stick to what they’ve personally experienced rather than what they’ve seen reported.

Waters, serving California’s 43rd District since 1991, seems to think that vandalizing police vehicles, looting shops, and blocking streets doesn’t equate to violence. Notably, others in the party, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris, have echoed this sentiment, describing the riots as “incredibly peaceful.”

This is a concerning stance for Democrats, especially considering the shift in public opinion over the last decade. Interestingly, only a few, like Democratic Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania, have voiced dissent from this position. In a post, Fetterman contradicted his colleagues and criticized their approach towards the protests.

“I represent freedom of speech and peaceful demonstrations, but what’s occurring is disorder,” Fetterman stated. He stressed that the party risks losing credibility if it turns a blind eye to attacks on law enforcement.

Later, Fetterman emphasized that the destruction and chaos seen are unacceptable, urging dialogue around what he sees as a moral failing on the party’s part.

With the potential for the GOP to gain traction from this situation, Waters’ comments could pose a challenge for Democrats, particularly among middle-ground voters. Many citizens are concerned about illegal immigration and the outbreak of violence in their communities.

Republicans are likely to benefit from highlighting comments like Waters’ alongside footage of the protests, framing it as a reason for their electoral gains. It’s seen as an opportunity for the GOP to harness this narrative for the upcoming mid-term elections.
