KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine launched more than 100 drones at Russia last night over its seizure of Crimea, sparking a fire and explosions at a Russian arms depot deep inside the country and blocking a major highway, Russian media agencies and the Defense Ministry said.
The warehouse appears to be just a few kilometers (miles) from another warehouse that was hit by a Ukrainian drone attack early Wednesday, wounding 13 people and causing a large fire.
Russian authorities closed 100 kilometers of highway and evacuated passengers from a nearby train station on Saturday after a series of explosions sparked by fire. A post on a local channel on messaging app Telegram said the attack came at a missile site near the town of Toropets in Russia's Tver Oblast, about 380 kilometers northwest of Moscow and 500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
Unconfirmed images circulating on Telegram showed a large ball of flame rising into the night sky and dozens of smoke trails from the explosion.
Evacuations were also triggered at an ammunition and missile depot in Russia's southwestern Krasnodar region after a separate attack on Saturday started a fire and triggered a series of explosions. Videos posted on social media showed bright orange clouds rising on the horizon and a near-constant rumble of explosions.
The Russian Defense Ministry said early Saturday that Russian forces had shot down 101 Ukrainian drones overnight over Russian territory and occupied Crimea. There were no immediate reports of casualties in either part of Russia.
