Another shark bite reported at a well-known Hilton Head beach within a week

Officials in South Carolina have reported a second shark bite incident this past Sunday in Hilton Head, a well-known beach destination, within just a week. Around noon, Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue responded to an emergency call at Colliny Beach Park and discovered a victim with a leg laceration consistent with a shark bite, according to a spokesperson for the Fire Rescue.

Firefighters quickly provided care on-site before the victim was transported to a local hospital for additional treatment. This marks the second shark encounter reported on Hilton Head Island since June 17, when another individual also suffered a leg wound attributed to a shark bite.

“The beaches and oceans are ever-changing natural environments,” stated Heather Woowine, the communications director for Hilton Head Island, in a message to news outlets. “Factors like crowd sizes, currents, wildlife, and other beach conditions can shift rapidly. Our team, along with our beach operations contractor, will continue to monitor wildlife activity as closely as possible.”

If schools of fish or sharks are sighted near swimmers, the team is prepared to take immediate action to clear the water. Woowine emphasized this precaution to ensure safety.

Officials have also taken steps to inform beachgoers of potential dangers through flag warnings. For instance, a purple flag means dangerous marine life is present, while a red flag indicates turbulent conditions, and a yellow flag signals milder conditions.

Summer is the peak tourist season for Hilton Head, and the island was recently ranked the best beach in South Carolina according to a notable travel publication’s annual rankings.
