Trends in the WNBA: Eurobasket Impact
In the WNBA, a noticeable trend this season has been European players opting out as Eurobasket draws near. This tournament is somewhat akin to the Americas’ basketball competitions but focuses on European teams. Unlike North American players, who might not be as tied to international play, European athletes often leave their WNBA teams to compete for their countries.
Notably, players who hold significant roles on teams with championship aspirations, like Gabby Williams from Seattle and Marine Johannes from New York representing France and Germany, have decided to skip Eurobasket. These players prefer to focus on their commitments in the WNBA, as they can leave their teams, participate in the tournament, and then need to reintegrate afterward.
On the other hand, those who don’t play as prominently in the WNBA but are part of the international setup are seizing the opportunity to join their national teams. This has led some WNBA teams to release these “fringe” Eurobasket players. By doing so, teams can free up roster spots and bolster their lineup.
For instance, Sevgi Uzun was released by the Phoenix Mercury recently, and just this Wednesday, the Minnesota Lynx followed suit by waiving Mariem Badian, who plays for the French team. Badian has only logged 11 minutes in the league this season without scoring any points.
The Lynx may look to sign another player once the waiver on Badian goes through. With numerous free agents available, they have several options. Players like Ahri McDonald, recently let go by La Sparks, along with Hailey Jones, who was signed by both Indiana Fever and Phoenix, are notable candidates. Other potential additions include Laetyia Amihere, Grace Berger, and Serena Sundell.
As Eurobasket approaches, it’s becoming clearer that more players will be released by their current WNBA teams as they prepare for the tournament.
