Anthem Blue Cross and Northern Light Health Reach New Agreement
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has successfully negotiated a new contract with Northern Light Health, ensuring the latter remains part of Anthem’s network. The two organizations had been discussing the contract for several months, with the negotiations experiencing multiple interruptions. Although the prior agreement expired last week, Northern Light agreed to refrain from billing patients while discussions were ongoing. This new arrangement is retroactive to November 1, 2025, meaning that any care provided after this date will be included.
“This new agreement guarantees that patients will continue receiving quality care from providers they trust,” stated R. Guy Hudson, M.D., president and CEO of Northern Light Health, in a joint statement.
As Maine’s largest health insurer, Anthem’s agreement was crucial. Without it, over 30,000 residents would have lost access to Northern Light hospitals and doctors. Dennis McDonough, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine, expressed satisfaction with the new arrangement, highlighting that it supports their mission to enhance the health of communities across Maine.
Due to confidentiality clauses, specific terms of this new agreement are not available to the public. It also encompasses miners who are on employer-sponsored Anthem plans, along with those in Medicare Advantage and individual plans.
