Anthony Coley shares that his frustration with crime in DC is 'personal'

During a Wednesday segment, contributors on MSNBC discussed the rising concerns about crime in Washington, D.C. Many residents are reportedly unhappy about the situation. Anthony Coray, a legal analyst for the network, mentioned how this issue feels personal to him, as someone who lives in D.C.

Interestingly, Coray pointed out that this isn’t just a random complaint. He referred to polling data from the Washington Post, which indicated that a significant number of D.C. residents see crime as a serious problem.

Following this, many news outlets criticized President Donald Trump’s recent announcement about policing in the city. On “Morning Joe,” co-host Joe Scarborough mentioned that some liberal media outlets were perhaps not fully transparent about the crime concerns in D.C. He called out one reporter who mentioned feeling unsafe in the city while downplaying Trump’s plans.

In a separate conversation, a source from the Washington Post claimed that D.C. is generally safe, although there are worries about personal safety.

On Monday, Trump made headlines by declaring he would take control of the D.C. Metropolitan Police and deploy 800 National Guards to the area. Since August 7, law enforcement officers in the city have arrested over 100 individuals.

Responding to Trump’s measures, Coray described them as an excessive reaction. He expressed that while crime is a serious issue, the approach taken by Trump seems more like a political maneuver that exploits public fear. Moreover, he noted that the dynamics created by the Democrats on the D.C. Council played a role in enabling Trump’s actions.

In a candid moment, Coray also reflected on the political implications of Trump’s actions, suggesting that had juvenile crime not been a concern, Trump would still likely push for an increase in police presence.
