Duclair’s Comeback Sparks Triumph for Islanders
CALGARY, AB — The anticipated pairing of Anthony Duclair and Mathieu Barzal on the same line took a hit when Duclair suffered a groin tear just five games into last season.
This season, the Islanders tried to reconnect the duo but quickly backed off. Following his injury, it seemed like Duclair’s role as a top-six forward was nearly finished. He managed only three games in a higher line after Bo Horvat’s injury in December, often bouncing between the third and fourth lines or even being a healthy scratch at times.
Barzal, reflecting on Duclair’s recent strong performance, suggested that the two games he sat out might have fueled his resurgence. Since returning, Duclair’s scoring streak has matched his impressive five-game run as an Islander.
“As a player, it’s tough to see your spot in the lineup falter,” Barzal noted after practice at the Saddledome. “I think sometimes you take it for granted.”
Duclair has indeed been lighting it up lately, netting five goals in five games, including the game-winner on Thursday night against Edmonton. His performance has prompted coach Patrick Roy to reinstate him to the top line alongside Barzal and Anders Lee.
This line has held its own through a challenging road trip and will hit the ice together for four consecutive games against the Flames. Duclair, in particular, appears rejuvenated, having scored a hat trick in a decisive 9-0 victory over the Devils.
“That game was a real confidence boost for him,” coach Roy remarked. “He’s scoring pretty much every game now, which is great for us.”
The Islanders have been on the lookout for a reliable player to step into Kyle Palmieri’s former role since his ACL injury in mid-November. With Horvat injured again and Jonathan Drouin’s performance waning, they might just find the answer in Duclair, who was initially signed to fulfill that exact position.
“I see Dukie as a skilled player with a knack for goals,” Barzal expressed. “People sometimes underestimate his abilities. He’s been a crucial player for us.”
These road games present a tough challenge, especially against formidable teams. While he acknowledges that sometimes the offense doesn’t produce expected numbers, Barzal believes they are maintaining a consistent attacking presence.
“We want to control the offensive zone for the entire game,” he said. “It can be tricky. I’d love to keep pressure on them, but for now, I think we’re doing alright.”
