Anthony Hopkins Reflects on Estrangement from Daughter

More than two decades ago, Anthony Hopkins reached out in an attempt to reunite with his daughter, Abigail Hopkins, but that olive branch was not accepted.

The renowned actor has openly expressed a desire not to spend his life harboring resentment over Abigail’s decision to distance herself from him. When discussing the topic of repairing estranged relationships, he noted that after Abigail declined his invitation for visitation, he chose to respect her wishes rather than cling to bitterness.

Hopkins shared, “My wife, Stella, sent us an invitation to come see us. I didn’t get a single response, so I thought, ‘Okay, hope she’s okay,’ but I’m not going to waste my energy on that.” He added, “If you want to waste your life feeling resentful for decades, go ahead. That’s not my path.

He believes holding onto grudges is unproductive, emphasizing that “we’re all imperfect,” and suggests that recognizing our flaws is vital. “Life is tough, and we can get hurt, but it’s essential to move forward.”

When asked about sharing his literary work with Abigail, he seemed indifferent, stating, “I don’t want to hurt her and I don’t want to dwell on this for 20 years. I got an offer, but I’m fine with that.”

Hopkins, who has been estranged from Abigail since refusing to mend ties with her mother, Petronella Barker, during Abigail’s childhood, had a brief reunion in the ’90s when she appeared in his films, “Shadowlands” and “The Remains of the Day.” However, their connection has remained strained since an invitation for a reunion was turned down.

In previous interviews, Hopkins has discussed the uncertainty surrounding his relationship with his daughter. When asked about his feelings on separation, he simply expressed that “families drift apart,” and that sometimes people make choices that don’t involve each other.

On “The Interview,” he also recalled a transformative moment when he decided to quit drinking, realizing he could have put others at risk during one of his drunken drives. This epiphany came when he recognized the significant consequences of his actions. He found solace and clarity in a 12-step program, which he credits for his lasting sobriety of nearly 50 years.

Hopkins reflects on his struggle with alcohol, saying he drank to escape discomfort. Yet, he feels fortunate to have found a way to live life free from that burden.

As he approaches 86 years of age, Hopkins continues to embrace his work in film, remaining conscious of his mortality and appreciating each day.
