Anthony Joshua’s Potential Comeback This Year
It looks like Anthony Joshua might step back into the ring later this year.
After a tragic car accident in Nigeria last December that resulted in the deaths of two close friends, Joshua is expected to rejoin training in the coming weeks. Promoter Eddie Hearn mentioned Thursday that there’s a possibility of him fighting this summer.
Given the recent events, Joshua’s boxing future seems uncertain, especially with the loss of Shina Ghami and Latif “Rats” Ayodele.
“Initially, AJ had plans to fight in March and then face Tyson Fury in August. That’s not happening anymore,” Hearn told reporters in England. “He won’t fight Tyson Fury next. I believe he’ll be ready by the end of summer, but he’s not fit enough to resume training just yet,” Hearn added.
However, Hearn confirmed that Joshua is looking ahead, with plans to return to the ring by July.
“I’m making preparations, but he’s just taking time to recover right now. So, I’m gearing up for his potential return in July, but we’ll have a clearer picture once he’s back in training, probably in the next few weeks or so,” Hearn clarified.
Regarding the fight with Fury, he suggested that a matchup between them is probably not in the cards until late this year at the earliest.
“Honestly, every fight presents risks, especially considering what he has just gone through,” Hearn observed. “We’re open to the idea of a fight with Fury, but it’s likely more realistic for later this year or early 2027,” he said.
In his first public remarks since the accident, Joshua expressed gratitude for the support he’s received and spoke about realizing his late friends’ dreams.
“I want to help fulfill their aspirations. Even though they’re no longer here with us, I believe they’ll guide me in spirit as I pray. It’s not just about physical strength; it’s about inner resilience,” Joshua reflected.
“I’ll definitely keep them in my prayers and strive to make their dreams come true for their families,” he concluded.
