Anthony Richardson and the Vikings share a mutual interest

Anthony Richardson’s Future with the Vikings

There’s some interesting back-and-forth happening between Anthony Richardson and the Vikings. The 23-year-old quarterback has reportedly agreed with the Colts to look for a trade, and it seems Minnesota is considering adding Richardson to its roster alongside JJ McCarthy, having already started talks.

Cameron Wolfe from NFL Network noted that Richardson, who was the fourth overall pick in 2023, finds himself in a tricky situation in Indianapolis, having fallen out of favor. There’s a sense of “mutual interest” for Richardson to find a fresh start with the Vikings.

The Colts have given him the go-ahead to pursue trade options, especially with last season’s starter, Daniel Jones, sidelined due to a torn Achilles tendon and moving toward free agency.

Richardson’s career has been quite eventful. He’s completed about 50.6% of his passes over three seasons, totaling 2,400 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 15 starts. After losing the starting job to Jones, Richardson faced additional challenges—a fractured orbital socket from a pregame mishap ultimately put him on injured reserve.

Colts GM Chris Ballard hinted earlier this week that Richardson’s time in Indianapolis could be nearing its end. He mentioned at the NFL Combine that while he might not need a “complete fresh start,” there’s still room for development, suggesting that the organization believes in him, at least somewhat.

On the other side, the Vikings are also dealing with their own quarterback challenges. They recently entrusted JJ McCarthy, the 10th overall pick of 2024, as the starter, after letting go of Sam Darnold, who went on to secure a Super Bowl win.

However, McCarthy’s first season didn’t quite pan out as hoped. He threw for 1,632 yards, racking up 11 touchdowns but also 12 interceptions and was limited to just 10 games due to various injuries.

Following a promising 14-3 season under Darnold, the Vikings slipped to a 9-8 record and missed the playoffs. This kind of performance wasn’t what anyone expected, and it has left the Vikings looking for answers.

Rob Brzezinski, the Vikings’ executive vice president of football operations, acknowledged the need to focus on the quarterback position this offseason. He stated that a certain level of play from the quarterback is essential for the team’s success. He also pointed out that bad luck has plagued McCarthy with injuries but emphasized that they’re open to exploring all options moving forward. There are various factors they need to contemplate, especially concerning viability and effectiveness.
