BOSTON – Anthony Volpe’s Weekend Status
In the immediate future, Anthony Volpe is unlikely to play in the Red Sox series this weekend. This is due to a cortisone injection he received for his left shoulder on Wednesday.
Even if he recovers quickly, there’s no certainty that he’ll resume his position as the starting shortstop, especially with Jose Caballero stepping up in his absence.
Looking ahead, Brian Cashman indicated on Friday that he sees Volpe, just 24 years old, as the Yankees’ shortstop of the future.
“Yeah, I think he’s a good player,” Cashman stated before the Yankees defeated the Red Sox 4-1 at Fenway Park. “He has a lot of positive abilities. This season has been challenging, but we still have faith in his potential.”
Cashman added, “This isn’t the season we anticipated, yet it doesn’t diminish our belief in what he can achieve. He’s talented.”
Volpe has occasionally shown his skills during his early career, but consistency has been a concern. This season, he has made strides in both offensive and defensive aspects.
Over 460 career games, his batting average sits at .221, with an OPS of .661.
The Yankees are also evaluating the extent of Volpe’s shoulder injury, which he initially aggravated diving for a ball back in May.
Cashman noted, “At the start of the year, he underwent imaging and received a shot, which seemed to help. I thought he was past this, but he’s a competitive player who often goes all out.”
He emphasized that the situation isn’t straightforward, stating, “There are no clear answers. It’s complicated.”
Cashman mentioned that offseason surgery for Volpe hasn’t been ruled out, as they plan to conduct further imaging after the season wraps up.
The conversation around the shortstop position remains fluid. Cashman deferred to manager Aaron Boone regarding how things would play out once Volpe is fully cleared. Boone referred to the situation as “liquid,” indicating the need for adaptability.
“We’re going to make decisions based on what benefits us best at that time,” Boone said, referencing Caballero’s performance.
Recently, the Yankees had been cautious about Volpe’s usage, but now, with the end of the season approaching, they are adjusting their approach. Caballero has started in multiple consecutive games, with plans to keep him in the lineup as they move through the weekend.
“I hope Volpe can recover soon and rejoin the mix,” Boone remarked.
