Anthropic Files for Anticipated IPO Amid Rapid Growth and AI Ambitions

On Monday, Anthropic announced the filing of its prospectus for an initial public offering (IPO), aiming to secure funding to advance its aspirations in artificial intelligence (AI).

The filing indicates that Anthropic has experienced significant growth over the last year, accompanied by escalating expenses as the company invests heavily in the critical infrastructure required for its AI models.

Following the IPO, Anthropic’s stock is set to be traded on the Nasdaq under the ticker “ANT.”

The company had previously submitted a confidential IPO filing in June, positioning itself as a new reference point on Wall Street in the AI sector.

The firm, known for creating the Claude AI chatbot, last secured $65 billion in funding at a post-money valuation of $965 billion in late May, outpacing its competitor, OpenAI.

However, Anthropic’s SEC filing did not reveal the number of shares it plans to offer or the anticipated price range upon the IPO launch.

The company has also noted that it expects its expenses related to computing and infrastructure to remain its primary operating cost for the foreseeable future.

Financial disclosures indicate a stark rise in Anthropic’s expenses in that area, increasing from $433 million in 2023 to more than $2.5 billion in 2024, and then surging beyond $7.3 billion in 2025. In comparing the first halves of 2025 and 2026, compute and infrastructure expenses jumped from over $2.3 billion to more than $8.9 billion.

In terms of revenue, it surged from $386 million in 2024 to nearly $4.6 billion in 2025. The first half of 2025 saw Anthropic earn about $1.1 billion, rapidly expanding to nearly $16.3 billion in the equivalent period in 2026. The company acknowledged that its revenue is heavily reliant on a small number of customers and distribution channels.

Tech giants like Amazon and Google have been early partners, investing significant amounts into Anthropic and providing crucial cloud infrastructure for training and deployment of its Claude models.

In the prospectus, Anthropic expressed its belief that the swift proliferation of AI will transform every industry, potentially surpassing the impact of prior technological revolutions including industrialization and the internet.

ANTHROPIC CONFIDENTIALLY FILES FOR IPO

The filing also acknowledged heightened concerns about the existential risks that AI might pose, especially regarding autonomous models that could improve themselves without human oversight or become misaligned with human values.

Amodei has emphasized the need for labs like Anthropic to carefully advance AI development to ensure it aligns with human interests.

Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have been appointed to lead the Wall Street syndicate expected to underwrite Anthropic’s IPO.

Interestingly, Anthropic’s IPO comes on the heels of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which achieved a record IPO in June, pricing a $75 billion offering that valued the company at $1.75 trillion.

Additionally, OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, also filed for an IPO confidentially during June, with plans to pursue its listing by early 2027, although CEO Sam Altman indicated that the company wouldn’t go public this year due to safety concerns related to AI.
