Trump Labels Left-Wing Group as Terrorist Organization

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump denounced a group he referred to as a “sick, dangerous, radical left-wing disaster,” classifying it as a major terrorist organization.

He insisted that this decentralized group, which he described as anarcho-communist extremists, warrant a “thorough investigation” under the highest legal standards.

This renewed focus on combating left-wing extremism seems to have resonated with some political leaders on the Atlantic. For instance, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently enacted laws aimed at diminishing support for illegal immigration, detailing plans to officially designate Antifa as a terrorist organization within Hungary. He stated, “They have the audacity to attack peaceful people on the streets, leading to injuries and shame for us in the European Parliament. This is simply unacceptable.”

“It is essential to collaborate with the US, the world’s leading actor in the fight against terrorism,” Orban emphasized.

In reference to a February 2023 incident, Orban pointed out that several radical activists, allegedly from Germany, descended on Budapest and targeted various individuals. Some of these assailants managed to escape extradition, although Italian national Ilaria Salis was apprehended.

Salis avoided repercussions due to her status as a member of the Greens in the European Parliament. On Tuesday, the European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee voted to waive her political immunity, determining that Hungary could proceed with its criminal case against her.

Orban expressed gratitude towards Trump for his strong stance, saying it is important to name these individuals what they truly are: terrorists.

Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjártó, in a letter sent on Saturday, stressed that “The antifa movement poses a serious threat to the safety of the European Union.” He asserted the mutual responsibility to enhance collective security in response to such challenges.

Szijjártó echoed Trump’s views, declaring Hungary’s commitment to cooperating with the US on these pressing matters of terrorism. He called for the EU to follow Trump’s lead by adding Antifa to its list of terrorist organizations and implementing appropriate measures against affiliated groups and individuals.

There have been previous motions aimed at classifying Antifa as a terrorist entity within the EU, but this time, proponents suggest there may be significant momentum behind the initiative. For example, last week, a proposal was introduced in the Dutch Parliament urging the government to acknowledge Antifa as a terrorist organization. This motion, co-led by Geert Wilders from the Party for Freedom, warned that the group threatens politicians and employs intimidation and violence.

Dutch politician Thierry Baudet expressed his intent to ban Antifa entirely from the Netherlands, stating that this is merely the beginning of a broader campaign.
