Antonio Banderas Reflects on Life Changes After Health Scare

Antonio Banderas has embraced a simpler life, leaving behind his extravagant Hollywood lifestyle, and it’s been nearly a decade since he made that choice. At 65, the actor has no regrets about his decision to return to his roots in Malaga, Spain, back in 2017. The catalyst for this major shift was a serious heart attack that he described as a significant wake-up call.

“It was a really serious warning for me,” he shared, noting how the experience changed his perspective on life. Before this health scare, Banderas spent much of his time juggling homes between the U.S. and the U.K., where he owned a mansion in Surrey.

Following his heart attack, the “Desperado” star made several lifestyle changes. He quit smoking, sold his private jet, and invested in a local theater, emphasizing a return to his love for acting. “In the face of death, I looked back and realized that I was actually a theater actor,” he explained.

Now, Banderas lives in an apartment with his longtime partner, Nicole Kimpel, and owns a few restaurants. However, his true passion lies with his nonprofit theater, Teatro del Soho. “I have never been happier,” he said, sounding genuinely content.

Reflecting on his Hollywood journey, he mentioned that marrying his now ex-wife, Melanie Griffith, helped him overcome his fears about his English not being perfect. They divorced in 2015 after 18 years together.

He recounted how, at the beginning of his career, he was often typecast as a villain, a notion he challenged and ultimately overcame with his memorable role in 1998’s “The Mask of Zorro.” There, he played the hero, contrasting sharply with the stereotypical roles he was assigned before, where villains typically had blonde hair and blue eyes.

Banderas was also proud of his animated character in “Puss in Boots,” who, despite having a strong Spanish accent, was seen as a good character for younger audiences, changing the narrative surrounding his identity in media.

In a December 2022 interview, he described his heart attack as “one of the best things” that happened to him. “I realized this was probably one of the best things that happened in my life,” he reflected. The experience led him to reassess priorities, moving away from what he once deemed important.

“If I’m going to die, why worry about that?” he questioned. After witnessing the fragility of life, he seems to embrace a newfound clarity about what truly matters.
