Antonio Pierce to meet for Giants' coaching position

The Giants Seek a New Head Coach

The New York Giants are in the market for a new head coach, and they’re turning to familiar faces in uncertain times.

According to reports from ESPN, Antonio Pierce, who captained the Giants during their 2007 Super Bowl win, is set to interview for the head coaching position on Friday following a dinner with the team’s leadership tonight.

Pierce, who recently parted ways with the Raiders as their head coach earlier this season, has been seen around East Rutherford quite a bit.

In addition to Pierce’s impending interview, the Giants are also meeting today with former Falcons head coach Raheem Morris. This satisfies the Rooney Rule requirement, which mandates that teams interview at least two minority candidates. Once these interviews are complete, the Giants can make a hire without restrictions.

The Giants have also been embroiled in a lawsuit led by Brian Flores, alleging that NFL teams have conducted insincere interviews with minority candidates. They’ve interviewed interim head coach Mike Kafka, who has Puerto Rican heritage, as well as Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph via Zoom.

Pierce is certainly an intriguing choice, given his extensive knowledge of the organization and his candid nature. He’s known for not holding back.

During his five seasons with the Giants from 2005 to 2009, Pierce became one of the team’s standout free agent signings. He played a pivotal role in the victory over the undefeated Patriots during Super Bowl XLII, which remains one of the biggest upsets in NFL history.

Most recently, Pierce stepped up as the Raiders’ interim coach in 2023, leading them to a win against the Giants in his debut. He finished that term with a 5-4 record before being dismissed after a challenging 2023 season, concluding with a 4-13 record.
