Knicks’ OG Anunoby Shines in Game 5 Victory Over Hawks
After the first game, OG Anunoby mentioned he needed to improve on “everything,” but he didn’t elaborate much beyond that.
What is clear, however, is that his performance is grabbing attention. On Tuesday, he played a pivotal role in helping the Knicks secure a 126-97 win over the Hawks, pushing the series lead to 3-2 amidst the energetic atmosphere at Madison Square Garden.
In a solid 35-minute outing, Anunoby made his mark by contributing 19 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals, all while posting a plus-19 rating. It might be a stretch, but some could argue that the 6-foot-7 forward has been the standout Knick in this playoff series.
Over five games, he has averaged 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 1.4 steals, shooting an impressive 54.2 percent from beyond the arc. Even with a couple of setbacks, his impact has been hard to ignore.
To say he’s playing at a high level wouldn’t quite capture it, but it feels like he’s finding a groove. “I think he’s one of a kind,” remarked Jalen Brunson. “His work ethic and humanity shine through. During his time with the Knicks, he’s been phenomenal. I’m truly glad he’s on my side now. He creates challenges for opponents, and it’s clear he’s improving as he continues to work hard.”
The Knicks have managed to keep the Hawks under 100 points in their last two matchups, which hasn’t happened since their last visit to Atlanta back in March.
Anunoby is not just about scoring; he’s been a foundational piece for the Knicks’ defense as well. His versatility has been crucial in terms of maintaining that defensive edge.
“He’s one of the best two-way players in the NBA,” noted Karl-Anthony Towns. “This series is a great opportunity for him to show everyone what we’ve long known. When a player excels both offensively and defensively, it’s something special.”
“I genuinely believe he should be a first-team All-Defensive player, and he deserves that recognition,” he added.
