BOSTON – The Knicks have found a clear pattern when OG Anunoby is involved in their playoff games.
Over the last two years, they’ve maintained a flawless record of 8-0 in games where Anunoby attempts more than 14 shots. On the flip side, when he takes fewer than 13 shots, their record drops to 4-8.
In Game 1, he put up an impressive 29 points with a perfect shooting night of 10-for-10, helping secure a 108-105 overtime win at TD Garden on Monday night against the Celtics.
“Given our playing style, it’s obvious that guys like Jalen Brunson will get highlighted, but we can definitely feature Anunoby too,” Josh Hart remarked on Tuesday. He pointed out Anunoby’s shooting ability, noting that this year, it seems to be at an even higher level than before.
“The NBA can be really situational; sometimes he scores a lot, while other times he doesn’t get many touches. But when he does, he’s ready to deliver, whether it’s from the post or the three-point line, and can really capitalize on catch-and-shoot opportunities,” he added.
Anunoby has consistently been among the top defenders in the league, and the Knicks recognized his talent, offering him the largest contract in franchise history over the offseason. He’s proven he’s more than just a defensive asset; he’s a versatile star.
Knicks Reports from the 2025 NBA Playoffs
Anunoby has noticeably elevated his scoring game this season. Previously, he averaged 12.0 points and 9.6 attempts over seven years, but during the latest regular season, he boosted that to an average of 18.0 points on 13.9 attempts.
His scoring surged further during a stretch of 15 games when Brunson was out with an ankle injury, where Anunoby averaged 23.2 points on 16.8 attempts. This provided the Knicks with insights on how to maintain offensive efforts without Brunson, particularly through Anunoby.
Now, in the postseason, Anunoby is maintaining impressive numbers, averaging 19.0 points on 15.0 attempts.
“We need to be vigilant when it comes to Anunoby,” Celtics center Al Horford said after practice on Tuesday. “He’s a formidable shooter, and he can have a major impact on the game. We need to focus on limiting his opportunities, but we also have to acknowledge his skill.”
