Knicks vs. 76ers: A Close Call
PHILADELPHIA — OG Anunoby had quite the ups and downs in this game. With less than two minutes left and the Knicks clinging to a three-point lead, he executed a putback dunk to give the team some much-needed space. As the lead then shrank to two points, he drained a three-pointer to extend it back to five.
After that, he assisted Landry Shamet on another three-pointer, pushing the Knicks’ lead to eight. But in a tense moment with just 9.9 seconds left and the Knicks still ahead by three, Anunoby chose to go for a layup rather than dribble the ball to run out the clock. He was fouled, but a challenge from the 76ers reversed the call, handing possession back to Philadelphia.
Then Tyrese Maxey missed a crucial three-pointer, and Jalen Brunson was fouled but missed both free throws, giving the 76ers another shot to level the game. However, Anunoby redeemed himself by stealing a pass from Joel Embiid, effectively sealing the victory.
It was quite the roller coaster ride.
Anunoby spent the closing moments of the Knicks’ 112-109 victory over the 76ers on Saturday at Xfinity Mobile Arena defending Embiid, due to a small lineup after Karl-Anthony Towns fouled out midway through the fourth quarter.
Interestingly, Towns’ issues with fouls turned into a blessing. He picked up his fourth foul early in the third quarter, which forced Knicks coach Mike Brown to swap him out for Mitchell Robinson.
That substitution proved pivotal. The Knicks rallied with a quick 12-0 run, initially taking control before the 76ers rallied late.
Embiid showcased his MVP-caliber skills, scoring 28 points in the first half. But after Robinson entered the game, Embiid struggled and ended the third quarter without adding to his total.
Towns came back to start the fourth quarter but quickly picked up his fifth foul and headed back to the bench, resulting in a strong performance from Ariel Hukporti.
When Towns returned around seven minutes left in the game, the 76ers went on a small run, but he fouled out just two minutes later, allowing Embiid to make a free throw.
Robinson quickly made an impact by grabbing an offensive rebound that led to Shamet’s three-pointer and a steal from Embiid.
Towns ended the game with only 10 points. It seemed the Knicks thrived when he was off the court.
Brunson started strong, scoring 14 points in the first quarter and finishing with a team-high of 31 points, though he wasn’t as effective until the very end of the game.
Anunoby contributed by adding 23 points to the scoreboard.
Coach Brown has mentioned Miles McBride and Shamet as standout defensive players for the Knicks. McBride was absent for one of the last two games, while Shamet missed both, leading to challenging losses against the 76ers’ dynamic duo, Maxey and V.J. Edgecomb.
However, with both players back, Maxey and Edgecomb managed only 22 and 14 points, respectively, failing to penetrate the Knicks’ defense as decisively as before.
The arena buzzed with energy from Knicks fans, particularly in the third quarter, giving it a home-game atmosphere reminiscent of Madison Square Garden.
This win over the 76ers, while encouraging, doesn’t necessarily confirm that the Knicks are back on track, despite the Nets struggling recently.
