Knicks Secure Seventh Consecutive Victory with Anunoby’s Stellar Defense

While OG Anunoby’s offensive skills shone through in the stats, it was his defensive effort that truly impressed the Madison Square Garden crowd on Tuesday night.

The ninth-year forward faced a challenging task defending against a vigorous Zion Williamson.

Even though he shared defensive duties with Karl-Anthony Towns, Anunoby emerged as a pivotal figure in the Knicks’ 121-116 victory over the Pelicans, marking their seventh win in a row.

With nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and the Knicks leading 100-94, Williamson attempted to back Anunoby down, spinning to shoot over him.

Anunoby leaped and swatted the ball down the baseline, much to the delight of the Knicks fans. Williamson responded by putting his hands on his knees, clearly frustrated with the missed opportunity.

After the game, Anunoby remarked that it all came down to “expectation.”

Earlier, the 28-year-old had snatched a steal from a Pelican who lost control of the ball, while former teammate Jose Alvarado set up Mohamed Diawara for a jump shot.

Anunoby concluded the game with three steals and one block.

“OG was incredible on defense,” remarked Knicks coach Mike Brown. “He guarded a variety of players throughout, but closing out the game against Zion was huge. He’s difficult for anyone to handle, so what Anunoby did in those moments was critical.”

In their previous encounter, Williamson had scored 32 points against the Knicks on December 29.

This time, the Knicks limited him to 22 points, shooting an impressive 8-of-10 from the floor, yet he didn’t quite impose his usual dominance.

“I just aimed to make things challenging for him,” Anunoby explained. “It’s about making the catch more difficult, being physical, and playing strong one-on-one defense. My teammates communicate well and help me out, which makes a difference. I just focused on executing.”

On the offensive end, Anunoby was equally relentless, contributing 21 points to help the Knicks inch closer to securing a playoff position for the second seed in the East. He hit 7 of 16 attempts, along with 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

He also boasted a plus-17 rating for the night.

“Our defense across the board is solid, and when we communicate effectively, it translates on the court,” Anunoby noted.
