AOC and Sanders’ rise reveals who is leading the Democratic Party

Two prominent progressives in Congress are gaining attention, reflecting a surge in donations that surpasses their past contributions. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York has raised nearly $19.8 million from the start of the year until September, which is a notable increase compared to her $15.2 million haul throughout the 2023-2024 election cycle.

Sen. Bernie Sanders from Vermont has also reported significant fundraising, pulling in $19 million in 2025 alone—more than half of what he accumulated from 2019 to 2024. Both of these fundraising successes align with pressing national issues that have highlighted progressive concerns. For instance, the ongoing government shutdown, New York’s mayoral race, and debates about the party’s future have provided a platform for figures like Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders amid broader party struggles against Republican initiatives.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, another key player on the left, noted that Democratic donors are increasingly seeking a bold alternative and are willing to support candidates who reflect that desire. “More than 7 million people turned out on No Kings Day,” she remarked, alluding to protests against the administration. “These individuals are genuinely worried about the direction the country is heading under Donald Trump and want to fight back. Donating is part of that effort.”

Warren also pointed out that the Trump administration’s aggressive approach in its initial months has surprised many, altering expectations for political support. “This is beyond anything we’ve seen in modern history,” she added. “It’s reasonable for people to have been caught off guard.”

Interestingly, there’s a sense that progressives might secure further support in Congress influenced by external dynamics. Sanders cited New York mayoral hopeful Zoran Mamdani as an example of a candidate embodying progressive ideals and fueling momentum. “He’s got around 80,000 volunteers knocking on doors. That’s the sort of excitement we need throughout the country,” Sanders said.

Republican representatives have seized upon this situation to frame it as a reflection of the party’s trajectory. They argue that the current government shutdown, which has entered its 23rd day, serves as a maneuver by Senate Democrats to prevent far-left factions from overshadowing more centrist voices within the party. House Speaker Mike Johnson has been vocal about this, stating, “This government shutdown is just a political front for Chuck Schumer and the Democratic Party. They’re worried about the Marxist wing of the party trying to create a foothold.”

When asked whether progressives are experiencing a pivotal moment, Sanders suggested they’re more about adapting to the evolving political landscape. “As the world changes, our platform evolves daily,” he noted. “It’s a challenging situation.”
