Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Den.) stated on Monday that President Donald Trump prevented Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) from running in the upcoming Georgia Senate race, which she claims has led to Greene’s current “revenge tour” against the Republican Party.
During an Instagram livestream, Ocasio-Cortez remarked, “Oh, she’s rebelling against Trump, she’s rebelling against the administration.” She continued, explaining that Greene had aspirations for the Senate earlier this year, aiming to be the Republican candidate but was told no by Trump.
“So, Trump said no. The White House and Trump Land stood in the way of Greene’s ambitions to run for Senate, and she’s been fueled by that ever since,” Ocasio-Cortez added.
In May, Greene announced that she would not contest Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff and would forgo a Senate run next year. Republicans are eyeing Ossoff’s seat as a significant opportunity for a pickup in 2026.
Greene had commented at the time that just having a few good Republicans in the Senate “doesn’t change anything,” noting that Ossoff is merely a “pawn,” no different from party Republicans who miss crucial votes for fundraisers, failing their agenda.
Recently, Greene has intensified her criticism of Republican leadership, questioning the party’s stance on health care and the ongoing government shutdown, despite the party holding power in both Congress and the White House.
On ABC’s “The View,” Greene dismissed notions that her critiques could strain her relationship with Trump, asserting, “I love him.” She recounted her 2020 congressional run, highlighting her criticism of both Republican and Democratic establishments, drawing from her working-class background.
Greene has also diverged from the party on foreign policy issues, labeling Israel’s military actions in Gaza a “genocide” and a “humanitarian crisis.”
She cautioned that Republicans might lose their grip on the House if inflation and the rising costs of living do not improve soon, stating, “I can’t predict the future, but if Americans continue to struggle, I think Republicans will lose the House.” She added that voters would approach upcoming elections with their financial situations in mind.
