Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), a progressive Democrat from New York, has begun her candidacy to serve as the top Democrat on the House committee that leads investigative efforts against the federal government.
AOC announced her candidacy for ranking member of the 119th Congress' Oversight and Accountability Committee in a letter to her colleagues on Friday. This position is currently held by Representative Jamie Raskin (D-Md.).
In their pitch to colleagues, the “Squad” members said they were focused on leading the Democratic effort against President-elect Trump's incoming administration.
“This is not a position I would seek lightly,” he wrote in the letter. “The responsibility of leading Democrats on the House Oversight Committee during President Donald Trump's second White House term is grave and grave. Now, more than ever, we need to hold the government accountable and We must focus on the House Oversight Committee's strong history of holding Americans to account.''Economic instability and inequality challenge the American way of life.'' ”

“In the 119th Congress, Democrats on the Oversight Committee will face an important task. “We have to balance this with the ongoing struggle,” she continued.

AOC's announcement comes days after Raskin, the committee's current leader, announced he would seek the top Democratic post again in the next Congress.

AOC will also be running for the seat against Rep. Gerry Connolly, a Virginia Democrat who recently announced his candidacy for the supervisory position.
