AOC, Marjorie Taylor Greene trade barbs during fiery Garland hearing

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene had a heated exchange Thursday night during what was billed as a contempt hearing for Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The House Oversight Committee was originally convened to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt for refusing to respond to a subpoena to hand over audio recordings of President Biden’s meeting with the special counsel.

The hearing quickly spiraled out of control, with lawmakers arguing with each other. Less than an hour after the hearing began, Greene opened fire on her Democratic colleague, Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas.

“Do you know what we’re here for?” Mr. Crockett asked Mr. Green, but Mr. Green retorted. “I think your false eyelashes are ruining what you’re reading.”

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer appealed for order as groans could be heard in the chamber.

Ocasio-Cortez similarly opined: “I want to move to retract Ms. Greene’s words because I have a point of order. It is absolutely unacceptable to attack someone else’s appearance. How dare you…move her.” He paused. ”

“Are your feelings hurt?” Green asked.

“Oh, girl, girl!” Ocasio-Cortez fired back. “Don’t play!”

Ocasio-Cortez called for Greene’s comments to be “deleted.” This is a procedure that gives the speaker the opportunity to retract or amend his or her statement if it is deemed incorrect.

Comer adjourned the hearing while lawmakers considered whether to criticize Greene’s comments. During the discussion, Ocasio-Cortez could be heard saying, “That can’t be allowed,” and “Not today.”

“We’re not going to give a fancy apology. She has to actually apologize, and it needs to be up to Ms. Crockett as well,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “You have to be honest.”

Greene later agreed to take a swipe at her words, but refused to apologize and insulted Ocasio-Cortez’s intelligence, prompting Democratic lawmakers to do the same.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), who then asked the court clerk to report the words, asked Greene again if she would apologize, but Greene replied, “You’ll never get an apology from me.” No,” he answered.

Crockett later responded to the uproar at X.

“You mean MTG wants to talk about my appearance on COMMITTEE?!” Crockett said of Or when you get to Congress, this is what happens!”
