Ocasio-Cortez Addresses Los Angeles Riots
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, representing New York, recently downplayed the riots in Los Angeles, attributing the chaos to disruptive teens rather than violent anarchists. In a post on Bluesky, she stated that Democrats “don’t have to answer every teenager who throws a rock.” She felt her party was falling into a trap by trying to explain why parts of the city were witnessing such unrest.
Ocasio-Cortez criticized former President Trump, pointing to a scene where some rioters waved Mexican flags and engaged in violence, including throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at law enforcement. She mentioned that these events began on a Friday, prompting Trump to send in the National Guard and U.S. Marines.
“It seems the opposition feels compelled to participate in what I call a collective delusion,” she remarked. “They think they need to respond to every act of teen rebellion rather than addressing the real issue — a Trump administration that has been sowing confusion and escalating violence,” she added.
The rioters were reportedly throwing projectiles at police officers, with one individual fleeing after abandoning a vehicle near law enforcement in Paramount, California. This individual has been identified as Elpidio Reina, who was caught on camera during the conflict. Reina is allegedly connected to an incident where a rock was thrown at a federal officer, and the FBI has offered a reward for information leading to his arrest.
In another statement, Ocasio-Cortez linked Trump’s actions, such as the deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to apprehend illegal immigrants, to the unrest. She recalled that Trump promised extensive deportations in his second term, which she argues heightened tensions across the region.
Violence and Property Damage in Los Angeles
Ocasio-Cortez attributed the recent unrest to Trump’s incitement of violence in various public spaces. She expressed that, until then, things weren’t so chaotic. The chaos allegedly involved rioters setting off fireworks at police and vandalizing property, including graffiti on the Los Angeles Police Department’s headquarters. California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have also attempted to hold Trump accountable for the situation. Meanwhile, Trump and his supporters believe he acted decisively, arguing that without his intervention, the situation would have escalated further.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned, “If our troops don’t go to Los Angeles, it’s going to be burning on the ground now,” claiming his actions were for the safety of the city’s residents.
