AOC stumps for Biden-Harris and reproductive rights in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — With five days to go before she faces off against the Democratic nominee in the New York primary, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went to a downtown concert venue to make the case that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are the true defenders of abortion rights.

“We are the people who are going to save American democracy,” Ocasio-Cortez told a crowd of several hundred people gathered at an indoor rally on Thursday. “This room is the front line of our democracy, founded on the consent of the governed. And I am sending a message to these conservatives. [Supreme] “We disagree,” he said to the court and to Donald J. Trump.

The progressive Democrat claimed she was a “Planned Parenthood baby” because the mother decided to continue the pregnancy after the fetus was discovered during an ultrasound.

“But that’s her choice, not the choice of lobbyists or politicians,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

Choice and vocal opposition to Trump were highlights of the rally.

When state Democratic Party Chairman Daniel Monroe Moreno called Trump a “criminal,” the crowd cheered and one man yelled, “Put him in jail!”

“I had an abortion and it saved my life,” Alexis Gonzalez Black, a partner at August Public, told the crowd.

Ocasio-Cortez, who made headlines this week when she slammed the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) for funding candidates who opposed her fellow “Squad” members on the issue of supporting Israel in its war against Hamas, was greeted at the Fremont Country Club by a Mexican mariachi band that played standards such as “Cielito Linda.” Ocasio-Cortez is of Puerto Rican descent.

Notably absent were members of Nevada’s mostly Democratic congressional delegation, including Sen. Jacky Rosen, who is facing first-term Sen. Sam Brown, an Army veteran, in November, as well as Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, Rep. Dina Titus, Rep. Susie Lee and Rep. Steven Horsford, chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Nevada’s only Republican congressman, Mark Amodei of Reno, was a surprise attendee.

A spokesman for the Biden-Harris campaign confirmed the absence, blaming it on “scheduling” issues.

One local advocate, Christine Thomas of the Veterans Advocacy Council, said reproductive health is “absolutely” important.

“Even on the legislative side, we need to make sure everyone is aware that there have been instances in the past where things have changed because of a lack of representation.”

She said the Biden-Harris administration has a “clearer understanding” of the needs of women and the LGBTQ community.

But Democrat Peter Kulkin, who recently moved to the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson from Newburgh, New York, said Ocasio-Cortez could have held the event “two weeks from today” because of her primary challenge.

“She’s paying her dues here and I’m worried it will come at a cost to her,” he said.
