Ocasio-Cortez to Speak at Mayor Mamdani’s Inauguration
Far-left New York City Council member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is set to deliver the opening remarks at the inauguration celebration of Zoran Mamdani, taking place at Manhattan’s Canyon of Heroes on Thursday.
A cadre of left-leaning figures will join her, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Attorney General Letitia James, for what promises to be a lively block party. This celebration will unfold in a part of downtown renowned for its ticker-tape parades, where everything from Olympic winners to local sports teams have previously been honored.
Mamdani commented on Ocasio-Cortez’s impact: “For many New Yorkers feeling let down by a broken status quo, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez embodies a fresh approach to politics that prioritizes workers.” He also acknowledged her support during his campaign, mentioning his surprise win against former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary this past June.
“I’m proud to have her as a partner throughout our People Power Movement—from the primary election to various rallies leading up to this significant day. It’s an honor to have her here for this momentous occasion,” Mamdani expressed.
The inauguration will kick off with Mamdani’s swearing-in by James at a private ceremony, set to take place in the old Old City Hall subway station later in the evening. Following this, an outdoor celebration at City Hall will feature remarks from Ocasio-Cortez and possibly the public swearing-in of Mamdani’s team.
There’s a bit of uncertainty regarding whether the outgoing Mayor Eric Adams will retain any position after the tumultuous scandal that led Paul to withdraw his candidacy for a second term.
