Prostitution and Crime Resurge in Queens’ Roosevelt Avenue

Queens, New York – A familiar scene unfolds along Roosevelt Avenue, where the flashing “redlight” indicates a return to open recruitment for sex work. Local representatives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Grace Meng face increasing pressure as immigrant residents share their frustrations over deteriorating conditions, comparing them to a “Red Light District” or flea markets in struggling countries. Some refer to these areas as “the path of lovers,” acknowledging their infamous reputation.

Local activist Ramses Frias, who is also a Republican City Council candidate, expressed concern about crime in the area. “It’s like we’re prisoners in our own homes while criminals operate freely,” he stated. Gangs like Tren de Aragua are believed to be active in the region, leaving their marks through graffiti.

Following Ocasio-Cortez’s town hall meeting last month, it was observed that as many as 30 women were offering services right on a single block, undeterred by the nearby police presence. Interestingly, the women primarily worked on Meng’s side of the street, while vendors were more prevalent on Ocasio-Cortez’s side.

On a typical Friday, rows of vendors set up shop, selling everything from counterfeit electronics to fresh food. Just off Roosevelt Avenue, various illegal activities continued unabated, including sex work and bootleg vending. Residents worry that with the warmer weather, more individuals will be drawn to the streets.

Crime Rates and Police Response

Kaz Daughtry from NYPD’s Operations stated that a beefed-up police presence has led to a 29% decline in criminal activity this year. He pointed out significant decreases in various types of crime, but also emphasized the ongoing efforts needed to sustain these improvements.

A few days after Ocasio-Cortez’s meeting, authorities shut down a notorious local brothel known as the “Bodega Brothel,” which had been operating near schools. Video footage from inside revealed unsettling conditions. Additionally, police conducted sweeps in the area, which were met with onlookers amidst ongoing concerns regarding the safety of residents.

Residents like Frias argue that the community is well aware of these illegal activities and are fed up. They call for stricter laws and leaders who prioritize community safety. Frias criticized Ocasio-Cortez and Meng for their lack of visible engagement with local law enforcement in addressing these issues.

Ongoing Challenges and Community Response

Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams is working with local officials, including Councilman Francisco Moya, to address the issues plaguing Roosevelt Avenue, noting that the situation has escalated in recent years, particularly due to the immigration crisis. Daughtry highlighted Moya’s contributions and the efforts made to restore order.

While Ocasio-Cortez’s office has mentioned working on local improvements, including repairing neighborhood lighting, her recent town hall did not address the challenges on Roosevelt Avenue. Residents are increasingly vocal, calling for action from their elected officials.

One resident described a noticeable decline in safety: “I feel so saddened by what I see on Roosevelt. Many of these women seem trapped in terrible circumstances.” There’s a palpable sentiment for justice and a call to action for those in power to address these serious ongoing issues.
