An Associated Press freelance photographer has won an award for his photo of a naked, mutilated woman killed by the Islamic terrorist group Hamas.
The Associated Press and Ali Mahmoud won first place in the “Team Picture Story of the Year” contest for their photo of the late Shani Luke, according to the contest’s website. During the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Luke was carried half-naked into the back of a truck by Hamas terrorists, who then drove away with his body.
Shani Luke’s family asked the world to honor her memory by only sharing photos of her smiling.
Instead, the Associated Press is profiting from images of her mutilated body.

Mahmoud’s award in the Photo of the Year program “recognizes the collaborative efforts of a film crew in covering a single topic or news story,” according to the contest’s website. The winning photo captures a “pictorial narrative comprised of images taken as part of a team effort to cover a single issue or news story.” Shani Luke’s name is included in the website’s caption. He also posted the winning photo for “Picture of the Year” on Instagram, according to Jerusalem Post. The act reportedly received criticism online.
Ynet reports that AP photographers have already been accused of having ties to Hamas. The National Jewish Advocacy Center (NJAC) said the Associated Press “knew, or at least should have known” that some of the freelance photographers allegedly “participated in the October 7 massacre.” , reportedly sued the Associated Press on behalf of survivors of the terrorist attack. ”
