Colt Gray Sentenced to Life for School Shooting
Colt Gray, a 16-year-old, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty to 55 felony counts, including murder. This follows a tragic incident at a Georgia high school in 2024, where he fatally shot four individuals.
The sentencing occurred during a court hearing on Tuesday. Judge Nicholas Primm expressed his discontent with Gray’s apparent lack of remorse. He remarked, “You do not seem to be tormented by what you did… You’re proud of yourself.” The judge indicated that Gray had a clear understanding of the consequences of his actions, describing them as “deliberate, contemplated evil.”
“It’s only a measure of closure,” Judge Primm noted, reflecting on the irreversible damage caused by the shooting. He highlighted that the victims’ families would continue to carry the scars of that day.
After the sentence was announced, Gray reportedly looked toward his grandmother, Debbie Polhamus, as he was led away in handcuffs, avoiding any remarks to the court.
During the September 4, 2024, shooting at Apalachee High School, Gray, then 14, killed teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie, as well as two students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo.
Investigators revealed that prior to the shooting, Gray had a disturbing fascination with previous school shooters. He was particularly fixated on those responsible for tragedies at Columbine High School, Sandy Hook Elementary, and Parkland. His sentencing parallels that of Nikolas Cruz, who received a similar life sentence for his role in a Florida school shooting.
In a detailed search of his bedroom, authorities found evidence of his obsession, including a shrine dedicated to Cruz, filled with photos saved on his phone and displayed on his walls.
Additionally, Gray’s father, Colin Gray, was convicted of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter earlier this year for providing his son with the firearm used in the attack.
