Apartment resident fatally shoots intruder, wounds another after break-in: Police

Residents of a Florida apartment building opened fire on the intruders after breaking in early in the morning, killing one person and wounding another.

west melbourne police told WESH TV Possibly armed people broke into a room at the Reserve at Melbourne apartment complex, after which the occupant of the room fired multiple shots.

Multiple residents told WESH they recalled the incident occurring around 2 a.m. Sunday and that police cars were responding.

One of the intruders who was shot was pronounced dead at Holmes Regional Medical Center, and the other was treated at a hospital, the department said.

WESH said the State Attorney’s Office referred questions about the shooting to the West Melbourne Police Department, which said an investigation is ongoing and it is working to determine what led to the home invasion. He added that If there is any relationship between the intruder and the resident.

“God knows what they were doing,” one resident told WESH on camera. It’s usually very quiet and everyone looks out for each other. I hope they do something to prevent this from happening again. ”

The resident told the station, “I’m against guns. I think we really need to look at it, but we don’t. I just stay home and stay out of the way.”

Other people living at the complex told WESH the incident shows the importance of gun ownership.
