According to Bloomberg, Apple will cut about 100 jobs.
The majority of the employees being laid off come from the team that runs the Apple Books app and the Apple Bookstore.
According to Bloomberg, Apple has cut about 100 jobs across the group as part of a “reprioritization” of its digital services division. Most of those let go reportedly worked on the teams that run the Apple Books app and Apple Bookstore, with the remaining cuts made in some engineering roles and in services like Apple News.
Bloomberg reports that the job cuts aren't a sign that Apple is shifting its focus away from services like Apple Books, which will continue to receive updates with new features. While its Services division, which includes Apple TV Plus, Apple News, Apple Music and more, has been a major revenue driver for Apple in recent years, the company reportedly doesn't see Apple Books as a key part of its lineup.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has previously said that cutting staff is a “last resort” for the company, and that until very recently, layoffs were rare (at least far fewer than those suffered by rival tech giants). In April, it was reported that at least 600 jobs had been cut from Apple's abandoned car and smartwatch display projects, and an undisclosed “small number” of roles were cut from the company's corporate retail team in 2023. We've reached out to Apple for comment on this latest round of cuts and will update if we hear back.
Apple had previously announced job cuts at its retail division.
The company also announced job cuts in its retail division this year.
It's been a tough time for the country's major technology and media companies, with many of the industry's largest companies cutting jobs due to falling advertising revenues and concerns about the broader economy.
