Apple Disables Security Feature for UK After Government Demands Backdoor to Spy on Users Worldwide

Apple is taking the unprecedented step of removing the highest level of data security tools from its UK customers after the government requests backdoor access to user data around the world. This demand was called an “unprecedented attack” on privacy by security experts.

BBC News Report That Apple has decided to disable Advanced Data Protection (ADP) features for UK users. This decision comes shortly after a request from the UK government for access to user data stored in Apple's iCloud service. ADP provides end-to-end encryption, allowing only account owners to view stored photos, documents and other sensitive information.

Earlier this month, the UK government invoked the Investigation Powers Act (IPA) to force Apple to provide access to user data. The tech giant has consistently opposed the creation of “backdoors” in crypto services, claiming that doing so would undermine the security of all users. Despite this stance, Apple has chosen to remove the option for UK customers to activate ADP.

As of Friday, any UK Apple users trying to enable the feature are filled with error messages. Existing ADP users will disable access at a later date. As ADP became available to Apple users in the UK in December 2022, the number of affected customers remains unknown.

Professor Alan Woodward, a cybersecurity expert at the University of Surrey, described the development as “very disappointing” and “self-harm” by the government. He states: “The UK government is all about weakening the online security and privacy of UK-based users. It was naive to think that the UK government can tell US tech companies what to do globally. .”

The move has also attracted criticism from privacy activists, who have called it an “unprecedented attack” on personal data. In the US, two senior politicians need to reevaluate the intelligence report sharing agreement with the UK, as the threat to American national security is so severe that the US government is required to reevaluate its intelligence report sharing agreement with the UK unless demand is withdrawn. It suggests.

In a statement, Apple expressed disappointment, saying, “Enhanced security in cloud storage with end-to-end encryption is more urgent than ever. Apple is committed to providing users with the highest level of security for their personal data. We are still committed and hope to be able to do so in the UK in the future.”

This column comes amid an increase in US pushes against regulations imposed on the high-tech sector by other countries. In a recent speech, US Vice President JD Vance revealed that the US is increasingly concerned about foreign governments that “tighten the screws” of US tech companies with its international footprint.
