Apple’s iPhone 17 Surges in Sales During Holiday Season

Apple’s iPhone 17 saw impressive sales over the holiday season, climbing nearly 25% for the tech giant. CEO Tim Cook described the results as “phenomenal” in a recent interview.

In the fiscal first quarter, Apple reported revenues of $143.8 billion, marking a 16% increase compared to the same period last year. Cook highlighted that this quarter achieved record sales in both North America and China, areas where Apple has faced heightened competition from local brands in recent years.

Despite ongoing challenges, Apple still faces a 10% tariff on goods shipped from China. Cook stated that the costs associated with these tariffs align with the company’s projected expenses of about $1.4 billion for the quarter.

When discussing AI investments, Cook mentioned that Apple is “acquisition-friendly” and that they tend to steer clear of partnerships with larger companies. Recently, Apple announced the acquisition of Q.ai, an Israeli AI audio firm. Cook expressed optimism, saying, “We think there are many benefits to the acquisition,” and noted that they are actively monitoring the market for future opportunities.

In the broader context of AI spending, both Microsoft and Meta have indicated they will significantly ramp up their investments—Microsoft by 66% and Meta by up to 87%. Cook confirmed Apple is also investing significantly, although he refrained from sharing specific figures.

There have been various speculations that Cook might be considering a transition from his leadership position, passing the torch to someone else. “I love my job, and part of it is making sure there’s succession within the company,” he remarked, emphasizing his commitment to this aspect of his role.

Additionally, Cook confirmed that Apple’s AI assistant, Siri, will be integrated with Google’s Gemini technology and is set to be launched later this year. When asked about his preference between Google and OpenAI in the AI landscape, Cook offered a nuanced perspective, saying he recognizes it as a sort of “collaboration,” which he believes will lay the groundwork for future advancements.
