Siri Users Can File Claims in Class Action Settlement
Current and former users of Apple devices with Siri might soon file financial claims related to a $95 million settlement from a class action lawsuit concerning Siri Eaves. This case claims the digital assistant violated user privacy.
To avoid going to trial, Apple agreed to a settlement, ensuring affected users receive compensation. The plaintiffs, spearheaded by Fumiko Lopez, alleged that Apple intercepted and recorded private conversations without consent and shared the information with third parties. The incidents reportedly occurred between October 2011 and March 2021, and even activating Siri could have led to eavesdropping.
Furthermore, plaintiffs claimed that Apple used data from these conversations to send targeted ads for products users hadn’t searched for previously. The settlement affects anyone who owned a Siri-enabled device in the U.S., including iPhones, iPads, and Macs, from September 17, 2014, to September 31, 2024.
According to the details on the settlement website, affected users could receive up to $20 for each Siri-enabled device, once the total amount is divided among the claims.
Apple, despite agreeing to the settlement, has denied any wrongdoing. A statement from the company clarified that it did not admit to any illegal activity. Users looking to claim, contest the settlement, or withdraw from it must do so by July 2nd.
Judge Jeffrey S. White, who oversees the case, is expected to rule on the settlement’s approval by August 1st. If there are no appeals, payments are anticipated to be processed shortly after a favorable decision.
In a legal statement from December 2024, Apple noted that users have the ability to turn Siri on or off, giving them control over the assistant.
