Apple Announces New Features for Upcoming iOS Update
In a recent announcement, Apple unveiled a significant feature set forthcoming in its iOS 26 update, marking a departure from its long-standing numerical convention. However, it’s important to note that not all devices will be eligible for the update when it rolls out.
During their annual showcase in Cupertino, California, Apple highlighted various enhancements slated for its devices.
Some of these improvements include enhanced audio quality for AirPods and an expanded scope for Apple Intelligence. The most notable updates feature a revamped Mac Spotlight, redesigned iPad layouts, new fitness applications for the Apple Watch, a novel spatial experience for the Apple Vision Pro, and a fresh redesign for Apple TV along with features enhancing the iPhone.
Participants in the Apple Developer Program can start testing these features right now. Those involved in the Apple Beta Software Program will be able to experience a public beta version next month. The rest of the Apple user base, however, will have to wait until fall for the complete software upgrade. While no specific release date was provided for iOS 26, it’s anticipated that it might launch around September, based on previous patterns.
That said, there are important considerations to keep in mind before upgrading.
Your device’s current status plays a key role. Insufficient storage, lack of internet connectivity, or a low battery might hinder your ability to download iOS 26.
Similarly, older devices may find it difficult to support the latest features, which is, you know, pretty much Apple’s way. For instance, with the Apple Intelligence features introduced last fall, only the newest iPhones could access them. Typically, such updates are restricted to compatible devices, including iPhone 15, 15 Pro Max, all iPhone 16 models, as well as select iPads and Macs that are M1 and newer.
However, numerous devices will still receive updates with iOS 26. According to Apple, this includes:
- iPhone 11 and later models
- Apple Watch Series with the new second-generation SE, Series 6 and earlier, and all Ultra models
- iPad Pro (M4), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation or later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation or later), iPad Air (M2 or later), iPad Air (3rd generation or newer), iPad (A16), iPad (8th generation or newer), and iPad Mini (A17 Pro, 5th generation, and later).
Additionally, the new AirPods 4 and Pro 2 models will see updates consistent with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26.
This iOS release will be noteworthy as it marks the first instance in which four iPhone models—including the SE (2nd generation and later), XR, XS Max, and XS—will not be compatible with major updates. Interestingly, these devices had access to iOS 18 just last year, and now the SE and XS Max have been classified as vintage by Apple.
If you’re uncertain about your device’s compatibility, you can check by opening the Settings app on your iPhone and navigating to General. For Macs, this information can be found in the Apple menu, while Apple offers instructions for identifying your iPad using model numbers.
