Apple held its most important event of the year today, unveiling its latest iPhone 16, Apple Watch 10 and AirPods lineup, and previewing its new artificial intelligence platform, Apple Intelligence. The announcement, early on September 9, comes just before other major global events, putting Apple in the spotlight ahead of the US presidential debates and a key decision by the European Commission regarding a $14 billion tax dispute with Ireland.

iPhone 16 lineup
I've attended and reported on nearly every Apple launch since the iPod, but this one is a whole new direction. The iPhone 16 series was the star of the show, with four new models: the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max. The standard models get slight upgrades in processor speed and memory, but the Pro models are expected to see more significant improvements.

Is it time to upgrade to a new iPhone?
iPhones will have bigger screens, thinner bezels and new cameras
With slightly larger, slimmer bezels and new camera systems, these devices are designed to appeal to both casual and professional users.
Notably, Apple is introducing a new touch-sensitive button on the Pro models for taking photos and videos that mimics the shutter on a DSLR camera. This feature, along with enhanced AI capabilities supported by 8GB of memory and a faster Neural Engine optimized for Apple Intelligence, is expected to be a standout selling point for the Pro devices.

Apple Intelligence: Powering AI
At the center of Monday's event was Apple's ever-growing AI strategy. Powering updates across devices, Apple Intelligence is poised to change the way users interact with their gadgets. The platform is still in its early stages, but initially will focus on streamlining notifications and summarizing messages. However, many features won't be fully released until next year, highlighting the continued development of this AI ecosystem.
The event's theme, “It's Glowtime,” hints at a major redesign of Siri, the centerpiece of Apple's AI experience. Apple Intelligence is off to a slow start, but it marks a crucial step in the company's efforts to keep up with competitors in the artificial intelligence race.

It will continue after October
While all the attention has been on the iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch, other products are in the works. Apple is in the process of transitioning its Mac lineup to the M4 chip, with updates to the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac likely due at an event later this fall. A new version of the iPhone SE, upgraded AirTags, and a refreshed iPad are also in the works, each due to launch next year.

Important points about the cart
The event comes at a critical time for Apple as it seeks to bounce back from its worst sales slump in decades. About 60% of Apple's revenue comes from its device ecosystem, and this latest lineup will not only boost sales, but also help drive spending on services, a key growth area for the company.
By introducing new AI-powered features and updates across its flagship products, Apple is gearing up for the next era of technology innovation. The question remains whether Apple Intelligence will live up to expectations and how quickly the company can deliver on its promises. For now, all eyes are on Cupertino as Apple takes another step toward an artificial intelligence future.
