Approval ratings for congressional Democrats reach new low: ‘Completely awful’

How Low Can They Be?

Congressional Democrats’ job approval rating has dropped to a new low, with barely two in ten Americans expressing satisfaction with their performance on Capitol Hill.

According to a Quinnipiac University poll released on Wednesday, just 19% of registered voters approve of how Congressional Democrats handle their responsibilities.

This rating marks the lowest recorded by the pollster since they began surveying in 2009.

Even among Democrat voters, over half (52%) disapprove of their representatives in Congress, with only 39% feeling positive about their performance.

“If Republicans have a bad approval number… Democrat approval numbers can be characterized as terrible,” commented Tim Malloy, a voting analyst from Quinnipiac University.

On the Republican side, about a third (33%) of voters approve of how Congressional Republicans are managing their duties, while 62% express disapproval. Interestingly, 77% of Republican voters approve of their party’s performance.

This survey, which included responses from nearly 1,300 voters, was conducted between July 10th and 14th after a major bill passed Congress without Democratic support.

Moreover, Congressional Republicans seem ready to push through a $9.4 billion retirement package this week, which will reduce funding for the US Agency for International Development (USAID), National Public Radio (NPR), and Public Broadcasting Services (PBS).

Since President Trump’s second term began, Congressional Democrats have struggled to keep pace with his agenda. They lost control of the Senate, and Republicans gained ground in the House following the November elections.

The party appears to lack cohesion, and there are no clear leaders emerging to guide Democrats through this turbulent period. Voter confidence in the Democratic Party continues to wane.

A Gallup poll indicated that Democrats’ trust in their Congressional leaders fell to a record low of 25% in April. Additionally, a Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics survey revealed that only 23% of people under the age of 30 approved of Congressional Democrats.

This April survey followed a period when Congressional Democrats failed to block the GOP-supported spending bill, which subsequently averted a government shutdown.

Previously, in March, Congressional Democrats had already hit a low, with a CNN and NBC News survey showing an approval rate of just 29%.
