Approximately 800,000 BetterHelp Customers Receive Refund Notices, FTC Says

Approximately 800,000 customers of online treatment platform BetterHelp will begin receiving refund notices related to a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

BetterHelp paid $7.8 million in 2023 to resolve FTC charges that it harvested user data, including personal health questions, for advertising and shared sensitive customer information with social media companies such as Facebook and Snapchat. Agreed to pay $.

The FTC accused the therapy company of not properly obtaining consumer consent beforehand, but BetterHelp did not admit to the charges.

The company said in a statement this week: “We are deeply committed to the privacy of our members and value the trust people place in us by using our services.”

Payments will be sent to those who signed up and paid for the service on the BetterHelp website between August 2017 and December 2020. This website also includes services on platforms such as MyTherapist, Faithful Counseling, and Pride Counseling.

BetterHelp, on the other hand, is still a big podcast sponsor. The company spent $8.3 million on podcast opportunities in March, nearly twice as much as its next largest sponsor, Amazon, according to podcast analytics group Magellan AI.

Additionally, BetterHelp is currently owned by Teladoc Health, an online medical services group, but its stock price has fallen significantly as the Covid-19 pandemic recedes.
