A former mortuary worker in Arkansas pleaded guilty Thursday to selling 24 boxes filled with body parts stolen from corpses at a medical school to a Pennsylvania man for nearly $11,000.

She was one of several people recently charged in what prosecutors called a nationwide scheme to steal and sell human body parts from an Arkansas mortuary and Harvard Medical School.

Candice Chapman Scott, 37, pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and one count of interstate transportation of stolen property. When she was charged in the case last year, she maintained her innocence.

An indictment unsealed last year accuses Scott of setting up a deal with Jeremy Pauley, a Pennsylvania man he met through a Facebook group about “weird things.”

In September, Polley pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the theft and sale of body parts from an Arkansas mortuary and Harvard University.

Ms. Scott was employed by Central Arkansas Funeral Home, where part of her work involved transporting, cremating, and embalming bodies. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock said the medical school sent there the cadaver’s remains, which were provided for testing by medical students.

Scott’s attorney declined to comment Thursday afternoon.

Under Scott’s plea agreement, federal prosecutors dropped 10 other wire and mail charges against her. She faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for transporting stolen property. She also faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for mail fraud.
