Texas Longhorns Victory Boosts College Football Playoff Hopes
Texas Longhorns football coach Steve Sarkisian is advocating for his team’s inclusion in the College Football Playoff after a thrilling comeback against Texas A&M, led by freshman quarterback Arch Manning.
In this game, Manning completed 14 of 29 passes for 179 yards and threw one touchdown. A pivotal moment came in the third quarter when Ryan Wingo scored on a 29-yard run, putting Texas ahead by three points. In the fourth quarter, Manning added a significant 35-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to ten.
Texas emerged victorious with a score of 27-17, effectively dashing Texas A&M’s hopes for a spot in the SEC Championship.
Sarkisian is firm in his belief that they deserve a shot at the playoffs, asserting, “We are definitely a playoff team and deserve a chance to play for a national championship.” However, if they do make the playoffs, it would be unusual, as they would be the first team with three losses to qualify. Their previous setbacks include defeats against Florida, Ohio State, and Georgia State.
In a heated discussion about their chances, Sarkisian remarked that their early-season matchup with the defending national champions should be seen as a positive rather than a negative. He implied that the narrative would be different if they had a record of 10-2.
Manning shared his coach’s sentiments, confidently stating, “We can beat anyone if you put us in. If you don’t think we’re one of the best 12 teams in the country, I don’t know what to tell you.”
For Texas to secure a playoff spot, there likely needs to be some upheaval in the rankings; they currently sit four places behind the Miami Hurricanes in the latest College Football Playoff rankings.
