Arch Manning Prepares for Starting Role

Arch Manning is set to kick off his first season as the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, although he’s had some experience, having started two games earlier in his career.

Mac Brown, the former head coach at Texas and North Carolina, made an interesting comparison, likening Manning to the legendary Vince Young, a past Longhorns quarterback.

Brown emphasized Manning’s humility, stating, “He seems to be listening,” referencing how Manning described himself as self-deprecating. Brown noted, “I like it. He’s like Vince, the same age,” which adds to the intrigue surrounding Manning’s upcoming season.

Reflecting on Young’s journey, it’s worth mentioning he didn’t have to rely heavily on his throwing skills during his sophomore year due to a strong backfield led by Cedric Benson. But in his junior year, everything changed. He won the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, leading the Longhorns to a remarkable National Championship victory over USC, during which he amassed 3,036 yards and threw 26 touchdown passes.

Brown also appreciated how Manning handled himself at SEC Media Days, notably avoiding distractions and focusing on his game.

Manning brings a rich football lineage with him; he’s the son of Cooper Manning and the nephew of NFL stars Peyton and Eli Manning, not to mention the grandson of Archie Manning. This background undoubtedly influences his approach to the game.

While he focuses on the present, it’s clear that Manning’s past still shapes his future. Last season, he tallied 939 yards and nine touchdown passes, but now he faces a daunting challenge as he begins his starting role against the defending champions, the Ohio State Buckeyes, on August 30th.
