Fans packed into the stadium thought a goal by Argentina’s Cristian Medina in the 16th minute of extra time had equalised the score, and the final whistle blew, seemingly ending the game, but the fans were told the game had been stopped and were ushered out of the stadium.

Match resumed almost two hours later after a goal was ruled out for offside by VAR and continued for a further three minutes before the final whistle in a largely empty stadium.

However, prior to this incident, Argentina’s training base was robbed, the team announced on Thursday.

“They came to train and took gold from us at the Olympics,” coach Javier Mascherano said after his team’s shocking 2-1 defeat. “I didn’t want to say anything after training and I don’t think it helps anything, but obviously it’s a bit unpleasant when these things happen.”

Mascherano said midfielder Thiago Almada’s watch was among the stolen items.

The Argentine delegation filed a complaint with police in Lyon, the prosecutor’s office in nearby Saint-Etienne said on Thursday. It is unclear what value the stolen items had, or what other items may have been taken from the base.
