Argentina Bans Foreigners Promoting Violence Against Nationals

On Wednesday, Argentina’s President Javier Milei enacted a decree that prohibits and expels foreigners who are found to be promoting or inciting violence or discriminatory messages against Argentines based on nationality.

Late Wednesday night, the President’s Office issued a brief statement explaining that this decision stemmed from a rise in “recent expressions of hostility towards the Argentine Republic and its people.”

The government emphasized that safeguarding the country, its citizens, and its symbols is a top priority, asserting that “those who attack the Argentine Republic are not welcome here.”

Milei’s regulations came through what’s known as a Decree of Emergency Necessity (DNU), which acts similarly to a presidential decree. This DNU is effective immediately but will be reviewed by Congress, where it could be either approved or rejected.

This new DNU aims to revise Argentina’s immigration laws, making it illegal to incite hate speech or violence directed at Argentine citizens or any individuals based on their nationality.

Additionally, this measure affects anyone involved in “acts of desecration against national symbols.”

According to the newspaper La Nación, the Argentine government claims that there has been a “significant” rise in hostile acts and messages targeted at the Argentine people, their culture, and national identity. The administration noted that such actions pose risks to the population and threaten the fundamental respect that foreigners must uphold when entering or residing in Argentina.

Furthermore, the decree clarifies that ideological dissent and criticism in political, academic, or civil contexts, which are protected under Argentina’s constitutional freedom of speech, are not subject to this new regulation.

Based on the decree cited by La Nación, these new regulations also permit the government to revoke residency permits for foreigners participating in the aforementioned anti-Argentine actions and may require their departure or deportation from the country.

In recent days, the Argentine government has alleged the existence of an “anti-Argentine” campaign on social media, particularly in light of Argentina’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. President Milei has accused left-wing governments in Brazil and Mexico and the US Democratic Party of possibly funding campaigns against his regime as the upcoming presidential election approaches.

While attending Brazil’s Liberal Party national convention, Milei criticized radical leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, labeling him as a “thief,” “convict,” and “socialist trash.”

Presidential Press Secretary Adrien Lavier reportedly supported Milei’s claims during a press conference, suggesting that many on the left want his model to fail so that it never truly succeeds. He noted, “There’s a theory that the left is orchestrating this anti-Argentine campaign to undermine the notion that the Argentine model can alleviate poverty and set production and export records. It’s all part of the game.”
